Legend says that Yemanja is a beautiful girl who walks on saltwater, dressed up in foam laces formed over blue waves, adorned with light, and glowing like jewelry. For anglers, she represents Mother-D’Água, the owner of Ocean riches and deity that blesses the daily work of fishermen, providing them with plenty of fish, health, and peace. Yemanja’s cult originated in Nigeria and was brought to Brazil by enslaved Africans. Here, they started a strong devotion that soon began attracting thousands of devotees. On February 2nd, believers pay homage to Yemanja in Bahia and other regions of Brazil, offering her presents suchas flowers, perfumes, decorated cakes and other delicate feminine objects. The ceremony takes place amidst sacred chants.
