This book traces the historical trajectory of Chapada Diamantina from the time of its first inhabitants, the Indians, to the present day. The aim is to build a broad panorama of the region, bringing together and integrating pieces of its saga, dispersed across countless sources. It presents an overview of its evolution, starting with the process of occupation and colonization, through diamond extraction, the colonels' wars and decadence, reaching the present day, when alternatives are explored to recover some portion of the lost wealth.
The approach adopted brings together elements of economic formation, social structure, political framework and cultural traits that help to compose the region's saga. The social, economic, political and cultural dimensions are explored in order to highlight their interrelationships, without which this historical path would not be identifiable. Enslaved people, colonels, bachelors, “small stingrays” and other participants in the drama of the formation of the region are observed in their social positions and the relationships between them, with the human perspective constituting the basic pillar of historical interpretation.
It is aimed at audiences interested in the regional history of Chapada Diamantina.
