This book uses poetic language to introduce Antônio Conselheiro, the man responsible for leading the village of Canudos, in the backlands of the state of Bahia, to new generations. Narrated in first person, the novel brings the reader closer to the unique character that was Conselheiro, who called himself “the pilgrim.” Words and figures come together to describe a historical moment that seems all too familiar and current: segregation, attempts to silence individuals, exclusion, income inequality, land rights, racism, xenophobia, and lies produced by certain centers of power to undermine popular movements, all of which are at stake.
