“African Legends of the Orixás” Collection

books from the African legends of the orixás collection - illustrated by Edsoleda The books in this collection present the reader with legends about the orixás based on reports by ethnologist Pierre Verger, except for the book “Ibejis”, which is based on a story told by the author's great-grandmother. The legends collected by Verger form the basis of Yoruba culture and were gathered over years of his research among the Yoruba of Nigeria and Benin.

Each of the seven books in the collection tells a legend and all of them are richly illustrated by artist and author Edsoleda Santos. These are short, intense and very engaging stories that, thanks to the beautiful watercolor paintings done masterfully by the artist, are capable of transporting the reader to a world of mysteries, passions, beauty, exuberant nature, supernatural forces, gods and goddesses.

The legends, written in a fluid and light way, can be read and appreciated both by adults who are interested in African culture, and by children who like fairy tales. Without a doubt, anyone who appreciates fine arts and watercolor painting will also delight in the sublime work of Edsoleda Santos. Far from serving only as a backdrop for legends, the artist's paintings tell us stories narrated through beautiful images full of feeling, expression, lightness and originality.

The stories in the collection are like fairy tales completely inserted in the context of African imagery and religiosity. Many aspects of Bahia's popular culture can also be identified in the books in the collection, such as the washing of the stairs of the Church of Bonfim (“Oxalufã”) and the origins of caruru in honor of Saint Cosmas and Saint Damião (“Ibejis”).
